WELCOME TO

NITRO
WORLD WAR I
BOOMTOWN MUSEUM
(304) 759-0200

  • Nitro was created in an
    eleven month period during
    America's mobilization for
    World War I.

  • During the eleven month
    period of Nitro's
    development, 110,000
    different people came and
    went.  There were never
    over 30,000 people at one
    time.

  • When construction first
    started, the town was
    referred to as Explosives
    Plant "C".  Ground was
    broken in December 23, 1917.

  • Other names that were
    considered for the city were
    Crawford City and Redwop
    (powder spelled backwards).

  • On September 29, 1982, on
the floor of the United States
    Senate, Senator Robert C.
    Byrd gave an explosive
    speech with respect to Nitro
and it's history, which led to
    the congressional resolution
a that established Nitro as a
    "Living Memorial to World
    War I".
